GLS EDUCATIONAL STRUCTURES

A course on ancient languages including Old Greek, Latin, Church Slavonic, Hebrew. Enrolment every September and January.

A preparatory grammar school class (pre-gymnasium) for 9 and 10-year old children. Enrolment from May to September 30.

Grammar school at the Shichalin Greek-Latin Study. The grammar school was opened on September 1, 1993. We seek to revive in Moscow the conservative educational institution which was typical for Moscow in the 19th-20th centuries. It prepared pupils for university studies on any discipline. The first grade of the grammar school is correspondent to the fifth grade in secondary school. The term is 7 years. The basis of the education is made up of the three blocks of disciplines: ancient languages, mathematics, catechism. Catecism includes an introduction to Church Slavonic and supplemented by choir singing; with the blessing of the priest, children may participate in church services.

From 1999, the Grammar School enrols children of 6 and 7 years of age to the 1-st grade of the elementary school and to a preparatory class of the elementary school. In addition to the obligatory disciplines envisaged by the basic curriculum, pupils are offered classes on modeling, drawing, choreography and church singing.

Starting from 1999, a Preparatory Grammar School Class begins at the GLS. Its purpose is to train grammar school teachers through evening and correspondence studies in the Russian language and literature, a foreign language, history, mathematics, physics, Latin and catechism.

THE ZEALOTS OF EDUCATION PUBLIC ORGANIZATION

The GLS and its Grammar School have initiated a public organization called "Zealots of Education". It was registered with the Ministry of Justice on June 10, 1998. Its aim is to develop the traditional forms of solid elementary, secondary and higher education in Russia through both state-run and private schools, such as grammar schools, lyceums, seminaries and other educational structures traditional in Russia. One of the immediate aims of the Zealots of Education is to establish in Moscow a Classic Education and Scholarship Center at the GLS and its Grammar School.

In May 1999, the Zealots of Education established its branch in Perm. Its aim is to found a grammar school there. Similar efforts have been made in Yekaterinburg, Tomsk, Saratov, Ulianovsk, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Ryazan and Klin. In this connection, the Zealots of Education are seeking to obtain the status of a national organization.

The work of the Zealots of Education has been blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia.
