The work under the Action by Churches Together - North Caucasus program continues

The Round Table Newsletter continues to inform its readers about the work of the program "Action by Churches Together - North Caucasus" giving aid to internally displaced people in Chechnya and neighboring regions. As a reminder, this program was organized under the aegis of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations with support from Action by Churches Together, an international Christian organization, and has been implemented by the Round Table for Religious Education and Diakonia.

At present, the most important migrational development in North Caucasus consists in the almost completed process of return of internally displaced people, who have spent the recent years in tent camps and other places of mass accommodation outside Chechnya, back to Chechnya. Over thirty thousand people of this category are deprived of their homes which were destroyed during the armed confrontation. They are accommodated at temporary accommodation stations prepared by the authority precisely for them.

In most cases, moving to these stations, families of internally displaced people have no essentials to arrange their everyday life, such as plates and dishes, bed linen, etc. The stations provide them only with furniture - beds, tables and chairs. They have no money to buy other essentials. That is why the humanitarian aid is so essential for them.

In March-April 2005, the ACT program provided 619 poorest families staying at these stations in Grozny with sets of household articles consisting of blankets, bed linen, towels and plates and dishes. The distribution was arranged and the lists of beneficiaries were drafted together with the local authorities and migration and social services.

The ACT program for North Caucasus plans to continue giving aid to internally displaced people in North Caucasus and will inform the readers of the Newsletter of its work.
